Recipe For A New Lawn….

Whether you’re building from scratch, or just renovating an existing lawn, we’re approaching that time of the year when seeding works best.

Of course, you can make the point for planting in spring because of ample supplies of natural rainwater.  But spring can also mean cold weather, slow germination, too much water, and patchy results.  August and September provide much more predictable results.

The recipe for a successful lawn start begins with proper preparation of the seed bed.  Whether you’re planting a new lawn, or renovating repaired ground for underground wiring, drainage, etc., it’s important to remove all the rocks and debris on the surface to provide a smooth growing surface.  You can do this two ways.  1) Use a rake and a wheelbarrow.  Or 2) Have Ever-Green professionally “clean” your ground with a lawn rake, or “rock hound”.

Ever-green hydro-seeding gives a new lawn planting every advantage for a fast and healthy start.

Once the ground has been prepared there are three common means of seeding.  1) Broadcast seeding with a spreader, the same one you’ll eventually use to put down fertilizer.  2)  You can slice the seed into the ground with equipment.  Or 3) Have Ever-Green professionally “hydro-seed” your lawn with a prepared slurry of water, seed, nutrient, and mulching material.  Hydro-seeding makes for the most uniform coverage, eliminating blowing straw, and keeps your seed moist, ensuring a more rapid germination.

Understand, too, that hydro-seeding gives you the option of using a variety of seeds, depending on the kind of ground, sunlight, shade, and other variables, with germinating rates ranging from 10 days to three weeks.

Whichever method you choose, once your grass is up and growing it’s important to use the proper “starter” nutrient, one that’s not too rich in nitrogen, which can actually damage young tender shoots.  Typically, one that emphasizes phosphorus is a good choice for need lawns.

And remember, nothing grows without the proper amount of moisture.  Ever-Green’s irrigation division can put Mother Nature at your finger tips with the flip of a switch.

Now, if you’re the industrious type you can tackle your seeding project with pride and enthusiasm that will sustain you and your lawn for years to come.  But if it seems a little overwhelming, call the professionals at Ever-Green for an estimate and options that’ll save you time, back ache, and the aggravation of less-than-desired results.  We’ll also come back as often as necessary to make your lawn the envy of the neighborhood.

Now you have it…the recipe for a new lawn!
